Meet the �ԹϺ�� Fellows for 2023-24 and hear how their work promotes the exchange of knowledge, skills and ideas between universities and countries of the Commonwealth.

Dr Sarangi Athukorala is a Microbiologist passionate about eco-friendly strategies in combating environmental issues and crop improvement using microbes, and reaching sustainable developmental goals. She mainly works on wastewater management, using green micro-algae and re-use of treated water in crop irrigation.

Her fellowship, with partner university Murdoch University in Australia, allows her to develop a multi-purpose wastewater treatment and re-use technology for rice crop irrigation in Sri Lanka.

Dr Somayeh Fardindoost is a researcher in the field of nanotechnology and biosensing, with a focus on the development of innovative techniques for medical diagnostics. She is passionate about advancing biosensing technologies to address pressing health challenges.

Dr Fardindoost applied for this fellowship, with partner university the University of Sydney in Australia, to pursue a project on the selective and sensitive detection of cholesterol from biofluids. This project leverages advanced nanomaterials and biosensor technologies to create a reliable tool for cholesterol monitoring, potentially improving early diagnosis and management of cardiovascular diseases.

Dr Catherine Danielle Leonard is an observational cosmologist, using astronomical observations to learn about the history, composition, and physical laws of our universe.

This fellowship allows Dr Leonard’s group at Newcastle University to continue their exciting work testing the nature of gravity on the largest scales in our universe. Through this fellowship, the group will conduct the first-ever cosmic structure tests of 4-Dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (4DEGB) gravity, a theory uniquely capable of challenging Einstein’s General Relativity.

Dr Collins Sankay Oboh is a lecturer, fraud analyst, ethicist, and Chartered Accountant. His research interests include ethics and moral development among professional accountants, fraud and corruption issues, and social and sustainability reporting.

Dr Oboh applied for this fellowship, partnering with the University of Sheffield in the UK, to address ethical breaches in sustainability reporting among companies in Nigeria. They will conduct in-depth research into the impact of individual and organisational ethical ideologies on sustainability reporting decisions to promote environmentally friendly companies, human well-being, and environmental perseverance in developing African countries.

Professor Wai Ho Wong is the Founding Director and Associate Professor of the Data Science and Policy Studies Programme at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and a fellow at Stanford University and UCL. His research focuses on AI and digital governance.

With this fellowship, Professor Wong aims to explore how Generative AI transforms higher education, fostering dialogue on the future of humanity. This Fellowship is in partnership with University College London in the UK.
